2002 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New explorer seats seven. introductionall new for 2002, the ford explorer is better than the previous version in every respect. Handling and ride quality are improved with a new frame and an independent rear suspension. Performance is quicker with new or improved overhead-cam engines. It's a quieter, more refined vehicle with an all-new interior. New safety features are being introduced.  but the biggest news for the explorer is the availability of third-row seating, allowing it to carry up to seven passengers. It's roomier and more comfortable, benefits of its longer wheelbase, wider track and some clever engineering.  in spite of all this, the new explorer looks familiar inside and out. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth; eddie bauer and limited come with leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is now standard on all models, boosting the explorer's power considerably. A new overhead-cam v8 695) is optional on all models. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional. Xls does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8.  xlt 27,780) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, a cd stereo instead of cassette, and more interior features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The new five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655.  limited and eddie bauer models (both $34,055) come with leather seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, a 290-watt six-cd stereo with six speakers, adjustable power pedals, fog lights, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and special wheels; there's also a white pearl coat limited that uses frost accents.  third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800) are options available on all models. A trailer towing prep package 395) replaces the class ii hitch (standard) with a class iii hitch, and adds a 3. 73 limited-slip rear axle and other hardware.  front side-impact (side curtain) airbags 495) are optional, which are designed to protect front and second-row occupants. Dual front airbags are standard. Anti-lock brakes are standard. Seatbelts use retractors and pretensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The headliner is a new safety canopy (that replaces the side curtain airbags) designed to protect occupants during a rollover in addition to protecting them from a side impact by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Smarter airbags, ford's advancetrac electronic stability program, power-adjustable pedals, and a telescoping steering wheel will also be added near the end of 2001. Everything on it is new, but the styling is an evolutionary design. It still looks like an explorer, just fresher and more contemporary. Ford didn't want to take any risks with the explorer's design after the styling of the previous taurus was so roundly criticized. It's a handsome vehicle and it looks contemporary. New jeweled headlamps and tail lamps improve safety. Better perimeter lighting from approach lights mounted on the bottoms of the outside mirrors enhances security. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. Ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners. A beefed up roof rack was designed to support up to 200 pounds.  while the new explorer attracted little attention, the new mountaineer caused people in parking lots to stop and point; people on the highway would look at it as they passed by, then stare in their mirrors.  the new explorer is the same overall length and the previous model, but it sits on a (two-inch) longer wheelbase and a much wider track, making it more stable and more comfortable. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. Leather on the eddie bauer model is attractive, but it seems like they could have put leather on the visible inside edge of the seat bottom. We've only glimpsed the cloth and weren't overly impressed, but it may have been a base xls model.  handsome gray wood accents, adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel (cy2002), and increased seat travel make the explorer fit a wider variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats and a relatively large center console help keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward, though, especially on the driver's door; i found myself fumbling around for it at night. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but they wouldn't accommodate my one-liter poland springs water bottle.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons for them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters. Finding and pressing the seat heater button illuminates a small indicator for each seat on the climate control display. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust and there's a knob on the uplevel seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the decision to add a third row of seating drove much of the design and engineering of the 2002 explorer. It isn't comfortable for an adult, however. When cargo space is needed, simply squeeze a lever and lightly push the third row forward. With some practice, it's possible to unlock the rear hatch, open it, and flip the third row out of the way with one hand, which is important when juggling an armload of groceries. The third-row bench folds neatly into the foot well. Well, maybe not so neatly.  the downside here is that the cargo floor is not flat in seven-passenger explorers. Neither the second nor the third rows fold perfectly flat. So the floor slopes back toward the rear hatch. Ride quality and handling are greatly im. 1999 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's best-selling sport-utility goes for another crown. introductionthere seems to be an unending stream of sport-utilities hitting showrooms, but none have come close to the popularity of the ford explorer.  its roominess, solid reputation for durability, quality engineering, good looks and overall reputation are all factors in its huge popularity. walkaroundbefore the ford explorer existed there was the jeep cherokee with its straight lines and sharp edges. The explorer introduced softer lines and rounded edges and set the prevailing suv style in the process. That look continues.  the distinctive, large grille is flanked by wraparound headlights. There's a slot for air in the bumper, and an air scoop below. The look suggests refined ruggedness, as well as strong family ties with the ford truck family-and that's precisely what the designers intended. There is a new front bumper and round fog lamps, new body side moldings, roof rack and lift gate trim. But the familiar explorer is still there.  the hood slants steeply, which gives the explorer an aggressive look. At the rear-a vestige of its truck heritage-are variable rate leaf springs. Turn the new t-handle toward 'gate' and the top-hinged door rises easily and parks up and well out of the way. Turn the handle toward 'window' and the glass can be raised by itself. Another feature we like is a convenient interior power lock/unlock button on top of the left rear wheel-well for operating the door locks when standing at the back of the vehicle.  a new optional reverse sensing system makes parallel parking much easier. The system uses sonar to warn the driver when anything is less than six feet behind the vehicle. The driver is alerted by a beeping sound that increases in frequency as the vehicle approaches the obstacle; the tone becomes continuous when the rear bumper is less than 10 inches from the object. We found the system to be extremely helpful in accurately judging distances when backing up. It's useful for positioning the explorer for loading and unloading. But entry height is not a serious problem. Shorter folks may find optional running boards helpful.  the overall design of the interior is quite good, featuring the flowing shapes and soft-edged buttons and controls now favored by ford. The various controls are king-size, making them easy to operate when the vehicle is moving, and we give the overall appearance of the instrument panel top marks. Floor consoles have been redesigned. Higher trim levels boast rear cupholders and a storage bin. The optional moon roof has a one-touch-open feature.  seating is a big plus. The front buckets are covered in high-quality cloth with an attractive, subdued pattern. The seats are among the most supportive in this class, with aggressive thigh and side bolsters.  the explorer's other strong suit is its best-in-class roominess, perhaps the key element in its popularity.  safety is improved this year with new optional side air bags. Housed in the outer side bolster of the front seats, they deploy within 30 milliseconds of impact.  a new homelink system can operate up to three remote controls to open garage doors and turn on house lights, which improves safety and convenience. And travelnote provides the driver with an electronic message recorder and play-back system.  three engines are available: a 4. 0-liter overhead-valve v6 rated at 160 horsepower, a 4. 0-liter single overhead-cam v6 with 210 horsepower, and a 5. 0-liter v8 that makes 215 horsepower.  deciding to buy an explorer is not too difficult. Deciding which explorer with which engine and which transmission may take an afternoon of brochure browsing. In between are the sport, xls, xlt and eddie bauer. This is the best engine for most folks. It provides plenty of power for passing and tackling long grades, yet it's inexpensive and delivers good fuel economy. It also comes with the five-speed automatic transmission, which does a gret  the v8 is the best choice for anyone who tows a trailer. It's easy to get in and out. Visibility all around is quite good in spite of the roof's large b- and c- pillars. The driver enjoys that secure, command-of-the-road seating position that's helped make sport-utilities so popular.  the explorer doesn't really drive like a truck. Though more springy than a sedan, the ride is comfortable. Some of that springiness has to do with its rear leaf springs, some of it has to do with the big tires. The suspension does do a good job absorbing road irregularities, though, and that's how it differs from other trucks. There's no excessive body lean in turns. The steering is exceptionally quick and precise. It doesn't wander in a straight line. It's easy to manage on narrow roads. It simply does not drive large.  overall, the explorer feels like a solid, well-built vehicle, though there is a bit of wind noise in the 40-60 mph range.  we're pleased with the acceleration performance provided by the revised 210-horsepower v6. It launches with enthusiasm and maintains that enthusiasm to a degree that would calm any concerns about safe merging with traffic. Like most sport-utility vehicles, the engine becomes noticeably audible under hard acceleration, but it's smooth and quiet under normal operation. Overall, the single overhead-cam v6 engine is a sweetheart. Unless extra torque is needed for towing a car or a big boat, we don't think it's necessary to spend the extra money for the v8.  although the explorer has racked up virtually all of its huge sales numbers with the standard 160-horsepower overhead-valve engine, the 210-horsepower overhead-cam engine is a much better powerplant. The auto mode is used for most driving, which continually monitors and adjusts power to the front wheels to minimize wheel slip. The 4x4 high mode electronically locks the transfer case in high gear, providing a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear wheels; this mode is primarily for driving off road or in extreme winter conditions. The 4x4 low mode switches the transfer case to the lower gear ranges for serious off-roading.  though superior to a car in terms of off-road capability, the explorer is not the leader in backwoods prowess. The anti-lock brakes improve control on slippery surfaces, allowing the driver to brake and steer at the same time. summarythe explorer operates in a populous realm, against some very able competition. It's not the least expensive sport-utility. But for the kind of all-around use most families get from their suvs, the explorer's formula is still tough to beat. assembled inst. 2007 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A family favorite with a strong record for safety. introductionford explorer is a traditional midsize suv with body-on-frame construction. Available with v6 or v8 power, it competes against the chevy trailblazer, jeep grand cherokee, toyota 4runner, and nissan pathfinder.  explorer was completely redesigned for the 2006 model year and we were pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes, all of which were vastly improved over the previous-generation. The latest explorer is quieter than previous models, and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter, and the interior has been improved throughout. More important, it's a very nice vehicle that's pleasant to live with and it compares well with the competition.  with the v8 engine, the explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds; that's about as much as a jeep grand cherokee with a hemi. And explorer is rated to carry up to 1,520 pounds of payload.  explorer earned the best possible impact protection rating in the government's crash tests: five stars for the driver in a frontal impact, the front-seat passenger in a frontal impact, front-seat occupants in a side impact, and rear-seat occupants in a side impact. (this was in the national highway traffic safety administration's 2006 model-year new car assessment program.) ford says the explorer is designed to meet all known federal frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through 2010.  for 2007, ford has simplified the model lineup. The safety canopy side air-curtain system is now standard on eddie bauer and limited. An auxiliary audio input jack is now standard, and power-retracting running boards and heated windshield wipers are available. And the available rear-seat dvd entertainment center comes with a larger, eight-inch screen.  the most important change for 2007 might be the new interior door handles, of all things. We found the door pulls on the 2006 models awkward, traceable to thick armrests engineered for crash protection. This situation has been improved for 2007.  though car-based suvs, or crossovers, such as the ford edge are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride, better handling, and easier interior access, the explorer remains a good choice for families that tow. Explorer's truck-based chassis gives it towing capability, while its clever independent rear suspension smoothes the ride for back-seat passengers. lineupthe 2007 ford explorer lineup comprises the xlt 2wd 25,300), xlt 4wd 27,595), eddie bauer 2wd 28,300), eddie bauer 4wd 30,595), limited 2wd 31,400), and limited 4wd 33,659). Xlt options include leather seating surfaces with heated front seats 995), heated windshield 300), and navigation 2,505). A power-folding third row is optional on all models. The third-row seat comes standard on the limited, but can be deleted for credit (-$375), providing a flatter cargo floor.  other options include a power glass sunroof 850); rear-seat dvd entertainment 1,295); power adjustable pedals 150); rear heat and air conditioning 675), sirius satellite radio 195); and power-retractable running boards 695).  safety features include the same roll stability control system already used by volvo and land rover. It intervenes with throttle and brakes when the computer senses an impending tip over. Other safety features standard on all explorers are seat-mounted side-impact air bags, adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, and passenger classifier in the front passenger seat. Safety canopy air bags, standard on limited and bauer, are optional 560) on xlt. walkaroundup front, ford explorer looks like an f-150 pickup with finer, scaled-down features. At the same time, its generous use of chrome, big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors make this latest-generation explorer look more like a lexus suv than a ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way.  between the elaborate lamps front and back, however, explorer is a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside.  each explorer trim level presents its own visual personality. There are dark wood accents in most models and darker, richer wood for the eddie bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield.  the seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than in older explorers, where we found them a bit hard. The colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone.  second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench with recline adjustment, or as two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo.  the third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than in an '05 or earlier explorer, so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding.  the cargo floor is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 in older models). The five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded.  the dvd-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, and a big eight-inch display.  the interior door handles are awkward to use, though this improves with familiarity. driving impressiontwo engines are available for the ford explorer. Both powertrains are smooth and quiet. With the lighter v6, the explorer is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both engines are pleasant and competent. It meets federal tier ii, bin 4 emissions requirements for ultra low emissions vehicle ii (ulev ii) status. It develops 292 horsepower, and 300 pound-feet of torque. The v8 delivers low emissions as well, meeting the tier ii, bin 5 federal standard, which is compliant with california's low emissions vehicle ii (lev ii) standard. The suspension is relatively supple, giving the explorer a nice ride on rough streets. Yet the explorer does not lean excess.
