1999 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big, new and innovative, it has nothing in common with the old one. introductionin the beginning, honda made its reputation on innovative thinking. From early two-cylinder minicars through clever antipollution technology to the light-alloy nsx two-seater, hondas were different. In more recent times, however, the company has set its sights on fitting into the automotive mainstream, promoting clean design, high quality and reliability to bring in the customers. to a large extent, that more conservative strategy has worked. This is one market where the unusual is not prized. Minivan owners have a basic, well-understood need for passenger and cargo capacity, occupant safety and comfort. Sales were less than anticipated, leading honda to begin development of a more traditional minivan. Thus the 1999 odyssey. in a market dominated by the chrysler, dodge and plymouth minivans, gm's chevy/oldsmobile/pontiac trio, ford windstar and toyota sienna, the odyssey makes good strategic sense for honda. The new odyssey is much bigger than the old one. While the old odyssey was small, the new one competes with the biggest minivans on the market. It's about the same size as the chrysler minivans (dodge caravan, plymouth voyager, chrysler town & country). It's slightly larger than the toyota sienna, but slightly smaller than the ford windstar and the gm minivans (chevrolet venture, oldsmobile silhouette, pontiac montana). all minivan designers face the same fact when it comes to styling: the ideal shape is a box. Corners can be rounded off, creases can be applied, glass area can be enlarged, nips and tucks can be made, but the essential form can't be altered. from a styling standpoint, the odyssey lands in the middle of its opposition. It's neither as distinctive as the attractive chrysler vans nor as anonymous as the sienna. Honda has made an attempt to give it some corporate identity around the grille area, but the profile and rear view are decidedly ordinary. The rear doors slide open, making it easier to get in at crowded shopping center parking lots. And there's a wide tailgate with a low lift-over height that makes it easy to load cargo. rather than ask customers to wade through long lists of options, honda has chosen to launch the odyssey in two trim levels. The odyssey is not available with side airbags - the safety benefits of which are debated among automakers. interiorhondas generally offer spacious passenger accommodations for their size and the odyssey is no exception. Space is plentiful by every measurement, with a special call going to headroom that will impress even professional basketball players. As a rule, however, the seven-passenger designation should be applied only when carrying children; adults will find themselves most comfortable when maximum occupancy is kept at six. one clever design feature has been carried over from the first-generation odyssey, and it's a good one. The third-row seat (called a 'magic' seat by honda) can be folded into a deep recess, leaving a completely flat floor aft of the second seat for carrying cargo. It is a relatively simple process, though the third-seat headrests must be removed and stowed in side pockets first. the second-row can be converted from two bucket seats to a full bench seat by sliding them together. They are also removable. As an alternative, the second- and third-row seats can be folded down, leaving space for large, flat items. honda takes top billing in the cupholder contest, providing nine receptacles - for seven passengers. All controls are easy to reach and operate, and all harmonize well with the overall design. The seating position is high and upright, with plenty of visibility in every direction. Materials are all top-grade, and the interior color scheme is exceptionally attractive. driving impressionminivan owners and honda owners alike will find their expectations met by the odyssey. It performs, handles, steers and rides like a minivan, albeit a very good one, and feels like a honda from behind the wheel. The odyssey engine has to pull around significantly more poundage than it would in, say, a ford windstar, so acceleration and fuel economy are average. Its ride quality was very good, if not quite exceptional, and it proved to be easily maneuverable in close-quarter situations. One small complaint surfaced on the highway, where a lack of immediate response when turning the steering wheel was noted. Whether due to excessive assist levels in the power steering, or tire design, this vagueness when deviating from a straight line did detract slightly from driving pleasure. Within the parameters set by the designers, it does its job well. Long-distance travel is no problem for the big honda. Comfortable seats, an efficient heating/ventilation/air conditioning system and good sound insulation see to that. summaryhonda designers, engineers and product planners have obviously put a lot of effort into getting the new odyssey right. Design features that made its predecessor a slow seller -- small size and side-door configuration most prominent among them -- are gone, and all the niceties and quality touches one would expect from honda are in ample supply. the odyssey does not really raise the bar in its class, but it does equal the efforts of the competition. Honda makes a civic to suit many types of people. Trim levels include cx, dx, lx, ex, hx and si. the least expensive model is the cx hatchback. Even a basic radio costs extra here, though a split/folding rear seat, tinted glass and a rear-window defroster are included. Regardless of body style, the basic dx trim level includes dual outside mirrors, an am/fm radio and adjustable steering column. All sedans and automatic transmission-equipped coupes and hatchbacks come with power steering. Mid-grade lx sedans add air conditioning, power windows and door locks and cruise control. Ex sedans and coupes come with just about everything, including a more powerful engine, a power moonroof and antilock brakes. Automatic transmission adds $800-$1,000 to most models. (see details on pricing & specifications page.). walkaroundclean, efficient styling reflects the purpose of the honda civic. All three body styles use identical sheet metal from front bumper to windshield. They feature a distinct wedge profile rising from front to rear with large headlights and taillights. Careful detailing lends character to a simple form. some of the details that make the civic appealing are also functional. The low cowl and hood line combine with generous glass area to provide exceptional visibility for driver and passengers. All three civics have large doors, and offer handy access to well-shaped stowage spaces in back. interiorcivic interiors are well-designed, neatly executed and more functional than ostentatious. Interior materials seem to have been selected with durability rather than maximum eye appeal in mind. Civics offer 12 cubic feet of luggage space and that can be augmented by folding down the rear seats. A base civic has but three gauges - speedometer, fuel level and coolant temperature - while up-level models add a tachometer. These are lightweight cars, so even the base 106-horsepower engine is more than sufficient. The uplevel choices are rated at 115 and 127 horsepower. All civic engines use 4-valve-per-cylinder technology (16v) for maximum efficiency. In fact, all are mechanically identical with the exception of those used in ex sedans and coupes and hx coupes. These add a variable valve timing system (called vtec by honda) that makes them extraordinarily responsive at any speed. Regardless of output, civic powerplants are exceptionally smooth and economical. a 5-speed manual transmission - one of the easiest-shifting gearboxes on the market - is standard for all civics. The optional 4-speed automatic uses electronic controls to minimize unnecessary shifting when driving up or down hills. Both transmissions are excellent and suit the high-revving characteristics of all three engines. hx coupe's optional continuously variable belt-drive transmission (cvt). It is a fascinating device controlled by what looks like a normal automatic shift lever with three forward ranges, though only drive is necessary in everyday use. Pull away from a stop and the engine revs faster than the car accelerates. The cvt seems a novelty at first, but after a few miles one begins to wonder why it hasn't replaced the automatic option in all civics. there's nothing lacking in the remainder of the civic's mechanical hardware either. It was comfortable at cruising speeds, boasting a ride that was smooth yet well enough controlled to fend off most pavement irregularities. Road and engine noise are always present, but only become obtrusive during hard acceleration. the driving pleasure really begins when the civic is urged through corners. Especially noteworthy is the power steering. Unlike some systems, the civic's steering does not isolate the driver from the road. Body roll is held to a minimum (the front stabilizer bar fitted to uplevel coupes and sedans really does help). The civic shines in these conditions. All civics are compact, with the largest sedan being just over 14 feet long. If economy is the primary motivator, any will do, with top honors going to the base coupe. Luxury, in a relative sense, is available as well, though the price for a full load of amenities puts the civic up against base versions of larger, more substantial cars. the easy part is deciding to make the civic a primary candidate while small-car shopping. Completely redesigned last year, this sixth-generation accord is a much better car than its predecessor - and that was a great car. Reliability should not be an issue. It is, after all, a honda. It is a remarkably easy car to drive and every aspect of it is user friendly. It's one of the best-selling cars in america, competing for top honors with the ford taurus and toyota camry. walkaroundthe accord was completely redesigned for 1998. Sharp edges and rounded corners lend an understated, refined look, while an aggressive stance gives it the air of a european sedan. While the previous accord coupe looked like a two-door version of the sedan, honda designed the 1998 model to have its own identity. Only the headlights and door handles are shared with the sedan. Indeed, the coupe is a handsome car, and a good choice for busy executives who want something practical and sporty. The other models come standard with a five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic is an $800 option. interiorhonda used airline business-class seating as a model for the accord interior and it's a marvel of space efficiency. Amazingly, the new interior is substantially roomier than last year's edition, but the exterior is just slightly larger. The front seats are wider and more comfortable than before, but the big news is in back where there's substantially more room for rear seat passengers. This makes the new accord a true midsize sedan, whereas before it was considered a big compact. bigger front and rear door openings make it easier to get in and out of the car. It's also easier to load cargo because the trunk opening is bigger. A new instrument panel features a two-tone finish with big gauges that are easy to read. Gone finally are the little silver metal switches that have locked doors for millions of honda products, replaced with more aesthetically appealing plastic ones that match the interior. for 1999, honda improved the accord's interior with new seat fabric. Sun visors offer sliding extensions, a homelink remote control system can be programmed to open garage doors, turn on house lights and turn off security systems. The air conditioning system, redesigned to reduce cool-down times by 30 percent, uses an air filtration system to keep pollen out and reduce diesel fumes from buses and trucks. driving impressionthis car is incredibly easy to drive. in an informal back-to-back test in ohio's cuyahoga valley, we discovered the accord ex v-6 feels lighter on its feet than the toyota camry, chevrolet malibu or ford taurus. Blasting up and down a rough, knarly little backroad, we explored the limits of handling, power and braking. The camry offered superb damping over the ripply pavement and the malibu surprised us with its handling prowess. The taurus seemed out of its element, heavy and ponderous. But the accord provided the sharpest transient response - turning left, then right, then left again. The accord also had the best brakes. the accord corners well with steering that's light and precise. The suspension damps out the bumps and keeps the tires planted on the road. The tires, by the way, (p205/65vr15 michelin mxv4) are quiet and the ride quality is flawless. this handling balance is a benefit of the accord's strong chassis and double-wishbone front and rear suspensions, which were completely redesigned for 1998. in cruise mode, the v6 engine just purrs along, barely audible. Stomp on the throttle and the vtec cam setup growls with authority. The 3. 0-liter v6 is equipped with honda's vtec (variable valve timing and valve lift electronic control) system is tuned to deliver optimum torque over a broad rev range. It's so smooth and so quiet that sometimes a glance at the tachometer is required to confirm that it's running. It provides lots of power for merging into traffic or entertaining its driver. it's possible to save some coin by ordering the 2. 3-liter vtec inline 4-cylinder engine, which was completely redesigned for 1998. It produces more power, less vibration and better fuel efficiency than its predecessor. It's so clean that the accord ex and lx with automatic transmissions meet california's demanding ultra-low emissions vehicle (ulev) standards; an lx automatic gets 30 mpg on the highway. Generating 150 hp at 5700 rpm, an accord equipped with this engine is a great package that deserves consideration by anyone shopping for a roomy mid-size car that excels in quality, durability, reliability, smoothness, ride quality, practicality and fuel efficiency. Up to eight cupholders are provided; a couple of them are big enough to hold a liter-sized water bottle yet feature spring-loaded prongs that can grip a paper coffee cup.
