2008 saturn sky review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New red line model brings performance to lineup. introductionthe saturn sky is a high-fashion, two-seat roadster designed to compete against the mazda mx-5 miata and other roadsters. Like the miata, the sky is relatively affordable when compared against the bmw z4, mercedes slk, porsche boxster, audi tt, and honda s2000. we think the saturn sky is well worth a look for anyone who wants a fun, two-seat cruiser that can drop the top and let the sun shine in. And the opel gt in europe. But while the solstice is rounded and quietly muscular with relatively subtle surface decoration, the sky is lean, sharp, aggressive and extroverted. Given their mechanical similarity, the two cars look remarkably different with dramatically different styling. The base sky comes better equipped than the base-level solstice. the sky comes with a choice of engines. The red line also comes with special front and rear styling, high-performance tires, and a sports suspension. for 2008, the saturn sky comes better equipped. All 2008 models come with stabilitrak electronic stability control, a limited-slip differential, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a power height adjuster for the driver's seat. The standard audio system has been upgraded and includes xm satellite radio. The base sky 25,855) comes with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, power mirrors, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver's seat, gm's driver information center, onstar, and a black cloth interior. For 2008 stabilitrak electronic stability control and a tire pressure monitor have been added to all models. walkaroundthe saturn sky looks more aggressive than the mechanically similar pontiac solstice. Horizontal creases extend from the top and bottom of those outlets into the doors, the top crease lining up neatly with the cut line for the engine hood opening. We think it is these lines, combined with the way that the sky's grille splits horizontally (rather than vertically, as on the solstice) that make the saturn look longer and flatter than the solstice, more complex against the pontiac's simple, more pressed-and-pleated rather than curvy and voluptuous. the sky's front lower fascia has unique styling elements, including functional brake cooling inlets and a mesh pattern in the lower grille that's said to improve air flow. Twin headrest nacelles just behind the cockpit (like the solstice's) lead to a short rear end with small, tasty corner-mounted taillamps. given the restrictions imposed by sharing the gm kappa platform, we think it's a pretty successful execution of a new saturn design, with only a few niggles, like the tiny sky badge hung out there in left field instead of centered under the saturn logo on the decklid where we think it belongs. the red line is in some ways more understated than the base model. It forgoes the horizontal strakes that divide the brake scoops on the base version, and substitutes black headlight bezels for the base model's bright finish. Then it adds some flash back into the mix with polished wheels and bright twin exhaust tips. the sky looks pretty cool with the top down, not so cool with the flying-buttress top up. Stowing the top requires popping the decklid with the key fob, which also unlocks the pins that hold down the two fabric extensions that attempt to smooth out the top's visual profile behind the rear window. This is in contrast to the simplicity of the miata's top. Like many traditional roadsters before it, the sky calls for some sympathy and understanding on the part of its owner. interiorthe interior of the sky is its achilles heel. While the dashboard and instrumentation are done well, the instruments themselves are set in hard-finished plastic with dramatic piano black shiny trim. The controls are all reachable and easy to use, but there is a lot of flash and reflection from the chrome rims on every knob and dial, and from shiny black trim. storage inside the cabin is limited. The glovebox is small, and there are no door pockets. The storage bin between the seats has an awkward push/twist lock instead of a simple pushbutton, and that bin doesn't hold much either. There are storage pockets on the back side of the seat backs and storage nets on the rear wall, but the seatback latch is buried in the darkness and it's hard to use. Weird, but it works. The seatback rake adjuster is a wheel, not a lever, and it is in a very tight space between the side of the seat and the door, nearly impossible to use with the doors closed. cargo room in the sky is barely adequate for a single person's weekend getaway, let alone a couple's. There's only 5. 4 cubic feet of space under the decklid with the top up, only 2. 0 cubic feet with th. 2008 saturn astra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New saturn is gm's best small car. introductionthe saturn astra is an all-new car. At least it's new to the american automotive landscape: astra has been offered for years in europe under the opel flag, where it's been giving the vw golf a run for top-seller bragging rights. The new astra is so much better in every respect than the saturn model it replaces that we've forgotten the earlier compact's name. the astra comes in two body styles, both hatchbacks designed for practicality and built on the same chassis. There's a three-door version that is lower in overall height than the five-door version, but otherwise they share the same outside dimensions. This package was developed on european roadways where performance is measured more by balance at speed than how fast it accelerates away from an intersection. Pricing fits that aspect too, running from under $16,000 to about $21,000 for a fully loaded model. it's also a good do-it-all kind of car: cart around a batch of kids, shuttle around town or cover big commuting miles, fill with a lot of school debris, or make a good basis for a pocket rocket like the gti, civic si, or mazdaspeed3. Air conditioning is not standard. Xe options include air conditioning 960), automatic 1,325), alloy wheels 350), stability control 495), two-panel sunroof 1,000) and heated front seats 250). the xr five-door 16,925) adds air conditioning, seven-speaker mp3 stereo with steering-wheel controls, alloy wheels and fog lamps. Except the ac and wheels, single options are the same as xe. Sport seats and upgraded instruments join the other features in the xr five-door sport handling group. Options include the automatic 1,325), 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tires 495), and heated front seats. Package groups are the premium trim 745) and advanced audio from the five-door.\ safety features standard on all astras include frontal, front side-impact, and side curtain airbags, one year of onstar safe & sound with accident notification, active front headrests, abs, traction control, and tire pressure monitors. Electronic stability control is standard on the three-door and optional on five-doors; we recommend opting for it because it can reduce skidding. White parking light bulbs belie the european heritage, as do simple yet stylish side signal repeaters that appear chrome jewelry until switched on when a signal can be seen anywhere on the side of the car, not just ahead of more vulnerable mirror-mounted devices. the lack of visual clutter and cladding should be welcome by all from the rust belt to the southern border; excess chrome is reserved mainly for badges and the horizontal trim front and rear. rear panel styling echoes the front with a recessed panel in the hatch split by trim and the license plate in another recess in the bumper; since they're all hatchbacks, all astras have rear wipers for better wet weather visibility. on the three-door, the window line arcs downward from about two-thirds through the front door; the earlier ford focus hatchback will come to mind as similar. The five-door has a similar look to the ends, although the rear is more upright to make full use of the footprint. The rear-door opening angles up and rearward from the wheel and, instead of reversing direction at the glass line, it keeps going up and aft to the top of the glass. Since the door opening matches the seated position of rear seat riders, this pays big dividends in getting into and out of, and seeing out of, the rear seat. perhaps not as stylish or unique as the saturn sky roadster, the saturn astra is still distinctive and has visual appeal. A lighter headliner and lots of glass keep the cabin fairly light and airy for the primarily dark color scheme. American drivers might have to make two minor adaptations, one using the icon bc, which stands for on-board computer for trip data, the other being electronic controls of wipers and signals that always have the stalk at its default or standard resting position. The back seat is better used for two adults or three children. The five-door will accommodate six-footers front and rear simultaneously.
